One person was killed and three were injured in a shooting that took place at the Cielo Vista shopping center in El Paso, Texas.
Two suspects are in custody, police said. All victims are men. El Paso University Medical Center said in a statement that two of the injured are in critical condition.
The mall is located near a Walmart where 23 people, mostly Hispanics, were killed in a racist shooting in August 2019. U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar said the mall shooting “brought back traumatic memories of the tragedy at Walmart.”
Details of what led to the shooting remain unclear. Interim police chief Peter Pasillas told Bloomberg that the Cielo Vista mall will remain closed until authorities complete their investigation. Pasillas stressed that the danger had passed.
El Paso, inhabited mainly by Hispanics, about 700 thousand people, is located on the US-Mexico border.
